Foreign film enthusiasts and fans of nature, culture and fine food can experience Croatia’s arthouse ‘Motovun Film Festival’ before taking a six-night, self-guided walking tour offered by On Foot Holidays, which journeys through hill country in northern Croatia, taking in the world’s smallest town.Held in the small fortified town from which it gets its name, the Motovun Film Festival will take place on July 26 – 30, 2017. The festival is dedicated to independent films and each year features around 70 films from around the world. With minimum segregation between the public and Croatian and international stars, the festival sees the town come to life in a celebration of arthouse and foreign films.Motovun is also the starting-point for On Foot Holidays’ Istria (northern Croatia) self-guided, inn-to-inn walking tour. After the Motovun Film Festival, guests can set off through hill country to Hum, which – with a population of 21 – is officially listed as the smallest town in the world. Over the following days, guests will travel past monuments, hidden valleys, hilltop towns and the ever-present Mount Učka, before seeing views of the Adriatic Sea and the islands. Travellers will then descend to the fishing village of Mošćenička, where the tour concludes.Along the way, guests will stay in family-run hotels, a hunter’s lodge and two authentic Croatian homes and treat their taste buds to a variety of local food, including pasta, olive oil, mushrooms, fresh truffles and an array of fresh seafood. Travellers wishing to stay in Motovun during the film festival can book the extra nights through On Foot Holidays. The route can be walked from April through to October, including after or before the Motovun Film Festival. The itinerary includes four to 6½ hours of walking each day, and is medium in difficulty. The tour costs from £620 per person, twin-share (approximately A$1012 depending on exchange rates), and includes six nights’ bed and breakfast, three evening meals, four picnic lunches and all luggage transfers, meaning walkers simply carry a day pack.
